McLaren Teases New Manual-Shift Supercar Inspired by the M6GT

McLaren has teased a new limited-production road car that appears to feature a manual gear shifter, potentially marking the return of a traditional manual transmission to the British supercar manufacturer for the first time since the McLaren F1.

The teaser video opens with archival footage of the McLaren M6GT, a road-car project developed by company founder Bruce McLaren in the late 1960s. The M6GT was conceived as a road-going Group 4 car with racing potential, but development was discontinued following Bruce McLaren’s death in 1970.

The new teaser then transitions to footage of an undisclosed McLaren model, with the final sequence showing a driver operating a manual-style gear shifter. The video also features archival audio of Bruce McLaren discussing his ambition to create a road car.

If confirmed, the new model could become McLaren’s first road car associated with a conventional manual gearbox since production of the legendary F1 ended in 1998. Reports have previously linked the project to the internal P50 designation, although McLaren has not officially confirmed the name.

Details about the powertrain remain undisclosed. The original M6GT used a small-block Chevrolet V8, while the new model is expected to use a version of McLaren’s modern 4.0-litre V8 engine. It also remains unclear whether the visible manual shifter will operate a conventional manual transmission or form part of a technology designed to replicate a traditional manual driving experience.

The new car is expected to be produced in extremely limited numbers, with reports suggesting fewer than 100 examples could be built. Its price is also expected to exceed the McLaren W1’s starting price of approximately US$2.1 million.

McLaren has confirmed that the new model will be unveiled on 14 August 2026, potentially during Monterey Car Week. The reveal could provide further details on its powertrain, transmission technology, production numbers and connection to Bruce McLaren’s original road-car vision.
