Volvo Trucks has begun series production of its latest generation of heavy-duty electric trucks, marking a significant step in the company’s transition from electric truck development to large-scale commercial production.
Production has started at Volvo’s Tuve plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, with the new Volvo FH Aero Electric with extended range leading the charge. The long-haul truck can travel up to 700 km on a single charge, according to Volvo Trucks.
700 km range expands electric long-haul potential
The FH Aero Electric achieves its extended range through a new e-axle architecture, which integrates the electric motors and gearbox while freeing additional chassis space for battery capacity.
The truck can be equipped with up to 48 tonnes gross combination weight and a payload of up to 28 tonnes. It also supports 700 kW Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology, allowing the batteries to charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 50 minutes.
This combination of range, payload and high-power charging is designed to make battery-electric trucks more practical for demanding hub-to-hub and long-distance transport operations.
Next-generation FH, FM and FMX Electric
Alongside the FH Aero Electric, Volvo is also introducing updated FH, FM and FMX Electric models.
These trucks offer ranges of up to 470 km and are designed for applications including regional distribution, construction, urban logistics, utilities and refuse collection. The new drivetrain can deliver up to 540 kW, while the trucks can be configured for demanding terrain and heavier-duty applications.
Charging from 20% to 80% using a 350 kW CCS system takes approximately 65 minutes.
Production in Sweden and Belgium
The new electric trucks are being produced at Volvo’s Tuve facility in Gothenburg and its plant in Ghent, Belgium. Volvo announced the latest generation in April 2026, with production and market rollout beginning during 2026.
Volvo Trucks says its electric portfolio now covers eight models, spanning urban distribution, regional transport, long-haul operations, construction and other specialised applications.
The company’s latest electric range demonstrates how advances in battery capacity, charging infrastructure and drivetrain technology are expanding the role of zero-tailpipe-emission trucks in commercial transport.
