DEBIX M8391-01 Industrial SBC Brings 9-TOPS AI Processing to Edge Applications

DEBIX has introduced the M8391-01, a compact industrial single-board computer (SBC) built around MediaTek’s Genio 720 (MT8391) processor and designed for edge AI, computer vision, robotics and industrial IoT applications.

The credit-card-sized board combines AI processing, multiple connectivity options and industrial-grade operating capabilities in a compact 85 × 56 mm design.

9-TOPS NPU for Local AI

At the heart of the M8391-01 is MediaTek’s Genio 720 platform, featuring two Arm Cortex-A78 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores. Graphics processing is handled by an Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, while the integrated NPU850 AI accelerator delivers up to 9 TOPS of AI performance.

This enables local AI inference for applications such as machine vision, robotics, intelligent IoT and other edge computing workloads without requiring constant cloud connectivity.

The board supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4 memory, with 4GB available as the standard configuration, alongside up to 64GB of eMMC storage. Storage can also be expanded through an M.2 PCIe 2.0 NVMe interface and MicroSD card slot.

Camera and Dual-Display Support

The M8391-01 includes a four-lane MIPI CSI camera interface supporting image sensors of up to 32MP at 30fps.

For display applications, the board provides four-lane MIPI DSI connectivity supporting resolutions up to 2.5K, while its eDP 1.4 interface can support displays up to 4K at 60fps.

These capabilities make the platform suitable for embedded vision systems, industrial control interfaces and intelligent display applications.

Industrial Connectivity

DEBIX has equipped the board with a broad range of connectivity options, including Gigabit Ethernet with PoE support, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4.

The SBC also features multiple USB ports, including USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and USB Type-C, as well as a 40-pin expansion header supporting interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, I2S and PWM.

Security features include Arm TrustZone, secure boot, hardware cryptographic engines, OTP memory and a hardware random-number generator.

Designed for Industrial Applications

The M8391-01 is available in commercial and industrial configurations. The industrial version can be specified with an operating temperature range extending from -40°C to 85°C, making it suitable for demanding embedded environments.

The board consumes a maximum of approximately 1.74W in commercial-grade configuration and 1.57W in industrial-grade configuration, according to DEBIX specifications.

Software support includes Android, Yocto Linux and Ubuntu, while the Mali-G57 GPU provides support for OpenGL ES, Vulkan and OpenCL.

DEBIX’s First MediaTek-Based Industrial SBC

The M8391-01 represents DEBIX’s first compact industrial SBC based on a MediaTek processor. The company has previously developed boards around platforms from NXP and Texas Instruments.

DEBIX has not yet announced pricing for the M8391-01, with the board currently available on an inquiry basis. Its combination of AI processing, camera support, industrial connectivity and compact dimensions positions it for applications across robotics, edge AI, industrial automation and intelligent IoT.
