The United Arab Emirates has taken what officials call a historic leap into the future of autonomous transportation with the launch of the nation’s first commercial fleet of self-driving electric trucks in the Al Jazeera Al Hamra industrial zone, a hub for advanced industrial projects.
The initiative results from a partnership between Evocargo, a developer of autonomous transport and autopilot systems, and RAK Ceramics, a global manufacturer of ceramics and sanitary ware. This milestone marks a major step forward for the UAE’s logistics sector, reinforcing its commitment to smart mobility and sustainable innovation.
A fleet of unmanned Evocargo N1 trucks is now transporting ceramics and sanitary ware products across the industrial zone. Equipped with AI-powered, multi-sensor systems, the trucks can read road signs, markings, pedestrian crossings, and infrastructure features in real time. Each vehicle delivers a range of up to 200 kilometers per charge, proving the technology’s readiness for everyday commercial operations.
Powered by a fifth-generation autopilot and a four-layer safety framework, the trucks use LIDARs, sonars, and cameras to navigate dynamic environments safely. The system processes navigation data continuously, pausing only for charging and simultaneous loading or unloading.
“This launch proves autonomous, zero-emission transport is no longer a concept but a viable commercial solution,” said Shaheem Musthafa, CEO of Evocargo’s UAE operations. “It transforms logistics by enhancing efficiency, cutting emissions, and making advanced mobility accessible through our Robots-as-a-Service model.”
Sustainability lies at the heart of the initiative. Operating entirely on electricity, the fleet reduces emissions and aligns with RAK Ceramics’ ESG goals, while supporting the UAE’s broader vision for sustainable industrial growth.
“Integrating autonomous electric trucks into our logistics operations reflects our dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility,” RAK Ceramics said in a statement. “This initiative strengthens operational efficiency and contributes to the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development — proving that industry and sustainability can advance together.”
