Trio Motion Technology Launches Motion-PLC Range to Simplify Machine Development

Trio Motion Technology has introduced the first controllers in its new Motion-PLC range, combining advanced motion control with the convenience and flexibility of a programmable logic controller (PLC). Engineered to simplify and accelerate machine development, the new controllers deliver high-performance motion over EtherCAT, integrated logic, and scalable I/O expansion.

The initial launch includes the MCS 30, MCS 40, and MCS 50 Flexible Machine Controllers, supporting up to eight axes of motion via high-speed EtherCAT. Designed for applications such as pick-and-place, gantries, glue laying, and flying shear, the controllers provide a compact solution for both stand-alone machines and sub-machines.

Connectivity is a key feature, with up to two Ethernet ports and support for fieldbus protocols including Modbus TCP, Profinet I/O, and Ethernet I/P. Extensive I/O integration further enhances machine connectivity, with up to 16 ‘click-in’ I/O slices supported through Trio’s MS-Bus system. Using the MS EC I/O coupler, this capacity can be scaled up to 1024 digital ports and 128 analogue ports, delivering flexibility for complex automation needs.

The MCS 40 and MCS 50 models are built on Trio’s proven Motion-iX engine, a platform refined over more than 30 years. A multi-tasking operating system enables motion and logic control in parallel, with pre-programmed functions ranging from simple point-to-point moves to complex coordinated motion. Developers benefit from programming in standard IEC 61131-3 PLC languages, a PLCopen motion library, and TrioBasic, Trio’s intuitive English-based language. Programming and commissioning are supported by Trio’s free Motion Perfect software, lowering the total cost of machine development.

Compact and installation-friendly, the Motion-PLC units measure just 100mm high, 75mm deep, and 23mm wide, making them suitable for both machine- and cabinet-mounted applications. Additional models in the Motion-PLC range are in development, including All-in-One Controllers with extended connectivity and onboard I/O options.

When combined with Trio’s servo drives, motors, and HMIs, the Motion-PLC range offers a fully integrated, motion-first automation solution backed by global support.

“Motion-PLC simplifies machine development,” said Tom Alexander, President of Trio Motion Technology. “It makes machines faster to design, install, and commission, while improving usability and reliability for end users. These benefits are powered by Trio’s long-standing motion control expertise, integrated with robust logic control.”
