Samsung Retail Investors Push for Extraordinary Shareholder Meeting Over Buybacks and Executive Bonuses

Retail investors in Samsung Electronics are seeking an extraordinary shareholder meeting to press for a significant share buyback programme and reforms to executive performance bonuses, reflecting growing investor focus on shareholder value and corporate governance.

The campaign is being led by South Korean retail shareholder platform ACT, which has begun collecting electronic signatures from investors to meet the ownership threshold required to formally request a shareholder meeting.

Among the key proposals is a call for Samsung Electronics to launch a share buyback programme worth approximately US$32 billion, a move supporters believe would enhance shareholder returns and strengthen investor confidence. The campaign also advocates for clearer limits on executive performance bonuses to improve accountability and align compensation with long-term company performance.

To secure the necessary support, ACT plans to engage institutional investors, including South Korea’s National Pension Service, as well as domestic and international asset management firms.

The initiative highlights increasing shareholder activism within South Korea’s corporate sector, where retail investors are taking a more active role in influencing corporate strategy, capital allocation and governance practices.

Samsung Electronics remains one of the world’s leading technology companies, with operations spanning semiconductors, consumer electronics and mobile devices. Investor decisions regarding capital management and executive remuneration are expected to remain key areas of focus as the company navigates a competitive global technology market.
