Changan Introduces Uni-S HEV Hybrid SUV in South Africa with 1,275km Claimed Range

Changan has unveiled the new Uni-S HEV in South Africa, expanding its SUV lineup with a petrol-electric hybrid that promises a claimed driving range of up to 1,275 km on a full tank.

The new model was revealed at the 2026 Festival of Motoring at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. It combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor, delivering a combined output of 166 kW and 290 Nm of torque.

Hybrid Powertrain and Fuel Efficiency

The Uni-S HEV uses a ternary lithium battery to power its electric motor and achieves a claimed average fuel consumption figure of 4.0 L/100 km.

With a 51-litre fuel tank, Changan estimates a driving range of 1,275 km between fuel stops. Actual consumption and range will depend on driving conditions and usage.

The hybrid version is distinguished from the petrol-only Uni-S by a revised front grille. Exterior colour options include white, black, Putty Grey, Shadow Grey and Fluorite Grey, while buyers can choose between red and black interior trims.

Two Trim Levels: CL and CE

The Changan Uni-S HEV will be offered in two specifications: CL and CE.

The entry-level CL includes leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other standard features include a 540-degree surround-view camera system and advanced driver assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning and lane-keep assist. The CL rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.

The flagship CE adds further comfort and convenience features, including:

  • 15 W wireless smartphone charging
  • Eight-speaker sound system
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Panoramic sunroof with rain-sensing automatic closure
  • Electrically operated tailgate
  • Front-seat memory functionality

The CE also adds blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, reverse cross-traffic alert and rear collision warning, alongside larger 19-inch alloy wheels.

Warranty and Service Plan

Changan South Africa has confirmed that the Uni-S HEV will come with a five-year/150,000 km warranty and a five-year/90,000 km service plan.

Local pricing has not yet been announced. The model’s final pricing will be an important factor in determining how it competes in South Africa’s increasingly diverse hybrid SUV market.
