GWM Adds 3.0-Litre Turbodiesel to Tank 500 and P500

GWM has introduced a new 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine for the Tank 500 and P500, giving both models additional torque and a new powertrain option for South African buyers.

The four-cylinder turbodiesel produces 170kW and 620Nm, providing stronger low-speed performance than the previous 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain. The new engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations.

New 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine

The new diesel powertrain is the key addition to the updated Tank 500 and P500 ranges. With 620Nm of torque, the engine is designed to provide the pulling power expected from large SUVs and bakkies.

GWM claims fuel consumption of 6.1 litres/100km for the Tank 500 and 7.1 litres/100km for the P500 in their respective 2WD configurations.

Real-world consumption can be higher depending on driving conditions, vehicle load and altitude.

Updated Tank 500

The Tank 500 has also received a facelift, with GWM replacing much of the previous exterior chrome with darker design elements.

Inside, the premium SUV retains its 14.6-inch infotainment display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while the cabin continues to focus on comfort and equipment.

The Tank 500 3.0TD range starts at:

  • R849,900 – 3.0TD 9AT 4×2 Super Luxury
  • R999,900 – 3.0TD 9AT 4×4 Overland

The new diesel models are positioned below the previous 2.0-litre hybrid, which was priced at R1,222,900.

P500 gains additional diesel power

The P500 also receives the new 3.0TD engine, strengthening its position in the large double-cab bakkie segment.

The model produces 170kW and 620Nm, while offering a claimed payload capacity of 980kg and a 3,500kg braked towing capacity.

Pricing starts at:

  • R724,900 – 3.0TD 9AT 4×2 Super Luxury
  • R799,900 – 3.0TD 9AT 4×4 Ultra Luxury

The P500 is also equipped with a premium interior and shares much of its front cabin design with the Tank 500.

Designed for South African conditions

The combination of a large-capacity diesel engine, high torque, 4×4 availability and substantial towing capacity gives the updated Tank 500 and P500 a powertrain suited to a wide range of applications.

The P500 is backed by a 7-year/200,000km warranty, 7-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance and a 7-year/75,000km service plan.

With the introduction of the 3.0-litre turbodiesel, GWM is expanding its powertrain offering in two of its larger vehicles while maintaining competitive pricing in the South African market.
