Clean Motion Enters Final Phase of EU GIANTS Urban Mobility Project

Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer Clean Motion has entered the final demonstration phase of the EU-funded GIANTS project, marking a significant milestone in the development of next-generation sustainable urban mobility solutions. As an OEM partner in the Horizon Europe initiative, the company will showcase its EVIG electric vehicle platform in real-world operating environments across six cities on four continents.

The GIANTS project, which runs from January 2024 to June 2027, brings together a consortium of 24 partners with a total budget of €15 million (approximately US$17.4 million). After completing the first 30 months of research and development, the project is now transitioning from technology development to large-scale field validation.

During the initial phase, consortium members established the technical foundation of the GIANTS platform, advanced vehicle and component designs, developed digital twin technologies, and prepared integrated mobility systems for real-world deployment.

The next stage will see the platform tested in Barcelona (Spain), Gothenburg (Sweden), Kisumu (Kenya), Delhi (India), Pune (India), and Manila (Philippines). These Living Labs have been selected to evaluate how the technology performs under a wide range of urban conditions, transport demands, and infrastructure environments.

For Clean Motion, the inclusion of Gothenburg, where its research, development, and manufacturing operations are based in nearby Jonsered, provides an important opportunity to validate the EVIG platform within its home market while comparing performance across diverse international cities.

The demonstrations will assess vehicle integration, operational efficiency, and the platform’s ability to support cleaner, more sustainable urban transportation systems that can be adapted to different regions around the world.

William Collings, Chief Technology Officer at Clean Motion, said the project has made significant progress during its first 30 months.

“GIANTS is progressing well and we are pleased with what the consortium has achieved over the past 30 months. At Clean Motion, we are actively working on prototype development and we look forward to demonstrating what this platform can do in real urban environments over the coming year.”

The project represents an important step towards developing flexible electric mobility solutions capable of serving cities with varying transport challenges, from densely populated European centres to rapidly growing urban environments in Africa and Asia.

For African cities such as Kisumu, participation in the GIANTS project provides valuable insights into how lightweight electric vehicle platforms can support cleaner transport, reduce emissions, and improve urban mobility while addressing the continent’s growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
