Volkswagen appears to be preparing a new high-performance Tiguan R, with a pre-production prototype reportedly spotted undergoing testing in Europe.
Although Volkswagen has not officially confirmed the next-generation Tiguan R, the prototype features a quad exhaust system similar to the previous performance-focused Tiguan R, suggesting that a new high-performance variant could be under development.
The upcoming model is expected to share technology with the latest Volkswagen Golf R, potentially using a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing around 245 kW and 420 N.m of torque.
Power is expected to be delivered through Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The new Tiguan R could also feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, following a similar approach to Volkswagen’s upcoming performance models.
A torque-vectoring rear axle is also expected to form part of the performance package, allowing the system to distribute power between the rear wheels to improve traction and handling through corners.
While Volkswagen has yet to confirm production plans or an official reveal date, the new Tiguan R could potentially make its debut towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.
If confirmed, the performance SUV would strengthen Volkswagen’s growing range of sporty models while combining the practicality of the Tiguan with enhanced performance and advanced all-wheel-drive technology.
