Wayve and Uber have taken a significant step towards launching autonomous ride-hailing services in London after Transport for London (TfL) granted Private Hire Vehicle licences to Wayve’s fleet of autonomous Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles.
The approval satisfies London’s licensing requirements for private hire operations, enabling the companies to begin introducing autonomous rides under the UK’s Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Trialling Code of Practice. Each vehicle will operate through Uber’s platform while carrying a trained, TfL-licensed safety driver to oversee every journey during the trial phase.
Public interest in the service has been strong, with more than 100,000 Londoners registering for Uber’s autonomous ride interest list within just eight weeks. Selected users are expected to gain early access to the service before a wider rollout later this year.
The autonomous vehicles are powered by Wayve’s AI Driver, an artificial intelligence system that uses cameras, radar and machine learning to navigate roads. Unlike conventional autonomous driving systems that rely heavily on high-definition maps and geofenced routes, Wayve’s AI-first approach continuously learns from real-world driving experiences, allowing it to adapt to unfamiliar roads and changing traffic conditions.
Wayve has been developing and training its autonomous driving technology on UK roads since 2018 and has tested its AI system in more than 500 cities worldwide. Uber, meanwhile, continues expanding its autonomous mobility strategy and now collaborates with more than 30 autonomous vehicle technology partners globally.
The partnership marks another milestone in the commercial deployment of autonomous mobility solutions, with London positioning itself as one of Europe’s leading cities for testing and introducing AI-powered transportation technologies.
