Vehicle safety continues to play an increasingly important role for motorists, fleet operators and businesses across Africa as road safety remains a major priority. Advances in crash protection, driver assistance technologies and collision prevention systems are helping manufacturers develop safer vehicles that meet increasingly rigorous international safety standards.
Demonstrating this commitment, Audi has secured the highest number of 2026 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) awards among luxury vehicle manufacturers, following the latest recognition awarded to the 2026 Audi A6.
The addition of the A6 brings Audi’s total to seven IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards for the 2026 evaluation cycle, placing the manufacturer ahead of all other luxury brands as of July 2026.
The 2026 Audi A6, which introduces the ninth generation of the executive sedan, achieved the institute’s highest safety rating after earning “Good” scores in the small overlap front crash test, moderate overlap front crash test and side-impact evaluation.
The vehicle also achieved qualifying ratings for its headlight performance and front crash prevention technologies, reflecting Audi’s continued investment in active and passive safety systems.
According to the manufacturer, the latest A6 combines enhanced driving performance with improved refinement and an expanded range of standard driver assistance features compared with the previous generation.
In addition to the A6, six other Audi models have received 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ recognition. These include the 2026 Audi A5, Q5 and Q5 Sportback, together with the 2027 Audi A6 Sportback e-tron, Q6 e-tron and Q6 Sportback e-tron.
The awards come during one of the institute’s most demanding safety assessment cycles to date.
For the 2026 evaluations, the IIHS strengthened its testing requirements by increasing the emphasis on rear-seat occupant protection. Vehicles must now achieve a “Good” rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test to qualify for either the TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation. Previously, an “Acceptable” rating was sufficient for the standard award.
The institute has also raised the performance requirements for front crash prevention systems. To achieve the highest TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, vehicles must now earn a “Good” rating in pedestrian crash avoidance testing and at least an “Acceptable” rating in updated vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention evaluations that include motorcycles and heavy trucks alongside passenger vehicles.
In addition, qualifying collision avoidance technologies must now be fitted as standard equipment across all vehicle variants, ensuring that advanced safety features are available to every customer regardless of trim level.
For African motorists, fleet operators and government vehicle procurement programmes, international safety ratings continue to provide valuable benchmarks when evaluating new vehicles. As road traffic volumes increase across the continent, technologies such as automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane assistance and enhanced crash protection are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing road accidents and improving occupant safety.
The latest IIHS results highlight the automotive industry’s continued focus on developing vehicles that combine advanced engineering, intelligent driver assistance systems and stronger occupant protection to meet evolving global safety expectations.
