Mercedes-Benz has commenced production of electric drive units for its all-new, fully electric GLC SUV at the Star Assembly plant in Sebeș, Romania. The facility, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, is now integrated into the company’s global electric powertrain network, supplying components to vehicle assembly plants in Bremen, Germany, and Kecskemét, Hungary.
Jörg Burzer, Mercedes-Benz board member responsible for production, quality, and supply chain management, said:
“Producing the electric drive units for the new all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC marks an important milestone in our plant’s transformation and highlights Sebeș’s strategic role within our global production network. Investments in new production capabilities enhance flexibility and future readiness. I am proud of our highly skilled and engaged team, who will continue driving success with these advanced high-tech products.”
The company has invested in a 30,000-square-metre facility combining assembly and logistics for the electric drive line. The production line itself spans approximately 15,000 square metres, featuring over 200 manual and automated processes and is operated entirely by retrained staff from the existing workforce.
Ilie Bolojan, Prime Minister of Romania, commented:
“Mercedes-Benz’s investments bring technology transfer, market access, jobs, and integration of Romanian industry into the European value chain, laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth. Beyond production, these investments support education, social responsibility, and workforce development. Congratulations to the Star Assembly Sebeș team for their significant contribution.”
The Sebeș plant’s expanded capabilities align with Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to localise electric component manufacturing and operate all facilities on a net carbon-neutral basis. The site already uses renewable electricity and a heat pump system, with a 5 MW photovoltaic installation under consideration to further enhance sustainability.
Gheorghe Achim, CEO of Star Assembly and Star Transmission, said:
“Today marks an important step toward the future of mobility. This achievement reflects extensive collaboration, dedication, flexibility, and expertise. We are proud of our highly skilled workforce and grateful to the local community and authorities for their support. Together, we position Sebeș as a vital hub in Mercedes-Benz’s global electrification strategy.”
Established in 2013, the Sebeș plant originally focused on transmission assembly, added hybrid unit production in 2020, and now serves as a key site in Mercedes-Benz’s transition to full electrification, reinforcing its role in the company’s global e-mobility network.
