Volkswagen is considering selling a minority stake in its autonomous driving and mobility division, ADMT, which includes the Moia robotaxi service, as part of a broader strategy to attract external capital.
The initiative is part of a wider restructuring effort aimed at bringing in strategic or financial partners across various business segments—excluding its core automotive and battery operations.
Investor interest grows in ADMT
According to Manager Magazin, VW has launched efforts to secure a significant capital increase for ADMT and is already in discussions with potential partners. ADMT is responsible for Volkswagen’s robotaxi operations, including autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles, fleet management, and sensor software development.
Executives see strong revenue potential in the robotaxi sector, which could generate several billion euros. The unit is led by Christian Senger, former head of VW’s software division, Cariad. While VW CEO Oliver Blume is reportedly keen to maintain control of ADMT and Moia, sources cited by electrive note that bringing in strategic and financial partners could help accelerate development and scale.
Not limited to ADMT
Volkswagen’s investment push extends beyond ADMT. The company is also exploring partnership opportunities and potential divestments in other subsidiaries, including MHP, an IT consultancy owned by Porsche, and the engineering firm IAV. VW is further reviewing its stakes in lesser-known holdings, such as engine manufacturer Everllence and Porsche’s investment in U.S. software company Applied Intuition.
Negotiations over Everllence have reportedly become contentious, with internal disagreements creating frustration among investors and advisors involved in the process.
Despite the broad review, VW has ruled out external investment in its core car brands and its battery division, PowerCo. While there has been speculation about bringing in third-party investors to help offset the high development costs associated with battery production, management is intent on first proving PowerCo’s capabilities before considering any outside involvement.
