Volkswagen and Uber partner to launch autonomous vehicles in the US

Volkswagen Group of America’s autonomous mobility subsidiary, Volkswagen ADMT, has entered into a strategic partnership with Uber Technologies to deploy a fleet of all-electric, fully autonomous ID. Buzz AD vehicles across multiple U.S. markets over the next decade. The initiative will begin in Los Angeles, with testing expected to start later this year and the first commercial rollout planned for 2026.

To ensure safety and technological precision, the initial testing and launch phases will include human operators onboard. Each phase will advance only after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

The project is supported by MOIA, Volkswagen’s autonomous mobility brand, which will provide its end-to-end solution — combining the ID. Buzz AD with a software-driven system for integration on the Uber platform.

“Volkswagen is not just a car manufacturer — we’re shaping the future of mobility,” said Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen ADMT. “Our collaboration with Uber accelerates this vision by merging high-volume manufacturing with advanced autonomous tech and a deep understanding of urban mobility.”

Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, added: “Our partnership with Uber is a major step toward realizing transformational mobility and bringing the all-electric, reimagined ID. Buzz Microbus to more riders across the U.S.”

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, commented: “This collaboration is a milestone in autonomous mobility, highlighting our shared commitment with Volkswagen to redefine the future of transportation. We’re excited to launch in Los Angeles late next year.”
