Provider of battery analytics software Twaice has introduced an aging model specifically for sodium-ion batteries.
By adapting simulation software to accommodate sodium-ion batteries, Twaice aims to address the growing interest in alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion technology operates on principles similar to lithium-ion, with energy stored through the intercalation of ions in the electrodes.
Sodium-ion batteries are noted for their use of more accessible and environmentally friendly materials compared to lithium-ion batteries. They can also be advantageous in terms of lifespan, safety and performance at low temperatures, depending on the system design.
“As energy storage demand grows, sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a promising option,” said Michael Baumann, co-CEO of Twaice. “While we continue to innovate in lithium-ion technology, we are also committed to supporting alternative battery options like sodium-ion to stay at the forefront of battery storage solutions.”
The company’s new models aim to provide similar benefits for sodium-ion batteries as its software currently does for lithium batteries, helping storage operators maximize reliability and longevity. This expansion will allow researchers and engineers to explore the characteristics and aging behavior of sodium-ion batteries, according to Twaice, contributing to a better understanding of this technology.
The sodium-ion battery model is based on measurements conducted at Twaice’s Battery Research Center and uses the company’s modeling approach.
