Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), a Chinese automotive manufacturer, has officially entered the Kenyan auto market with the launch of its Vigus line of vehicles through its local distributor, Caetano Kenya. The launch event, held in Nairobi, introduced three models to the market: the Vigus single cab, double cab, and a light commercial truck.
Aurelien Glay, Managing Director of Caetano Kenya, noted that the Vigus range is designed to deliver reliability, durability, and cost-effectiveness—qualities that address Kenya’s growing demand for dependable commercial vehicles. He added that the vehicles will be assembled locally from completely knocked-down (CKD) kits imported from China, a move that reflects JMC’s commitment to affordability and the growth of Kenya’s automotive sector.
Sylvia Agani, Commercial and Marketing Director at Caetano Kenya, expressed confidence in the Vigus line’s market potential, projecting sales of at least 100 units by 2025. She attributed this outlook to the expansion of local industries, which is increasing demand for commercial transport, and the strong reputation of Chinese-manufactured products in Kenya. According to Agani, Kenyan consumers view Chinese vehicles as offering a good balance between quality and affordability. The single cab is priced at approximately 4.5 million Kenyan shillings (US$34,800), while the double cab is set to retail at around US$38,500.
